What is the purpose of the tippet, when fly fishing ?

The tippet is a short piece of leader material tied to the end of the leader. Typical leaders are tapered from 20 lb test to 6 lb or smaller. The tippet is about 6-12 inches long and it is tied to the leader and the fly. When the fly is changed, part of the tippet is lost, after 24 changes, the tippet is replaced with only a small loss of the expensive tapered leader. At least that's how I've done for 50 years.
