Grand Canyon - Can I do it in one day? Where to fly from New Jersey? Tips?

I have a business trip coming in September Phoenix and I want to fly a day or two earlier with my mother and my sister to see the Grand Canyon. Should I take the plane at the airport Sky Harbor, or to fly commercial aircraft in Flagstaff? Is it reasonable for her to fly into Phoenix, drive to the Grand Canyon (4 hours), see, spend the night near KM, then back to Phoenix the next day afternoon? As a poster mentioned above, Flagstaff (about 1.5 hours from the canyon) has a small airport. There is also a small airport in the canyon itself, just outside the gates of the park in Tusayan.
