is Rod Blagojevich helping his case or hurting his case by extending this drama out?
he could have easily stepped down a month ago, so is he helping himself by fighting it out?
He's helping himself greatly.
Other individuals in this situation panic, and then throw away all their bargaining chips when they start off with the resigning and the mea culpa speeches. Then when the time comes to ante up, they've got nothing to bargain with and so are sent away without much effort.
Blagojevich kept all of his bargaining chips, and on top of that has hired one h*ll of a lawyer. And by doing so, he seems to have thrown everyone else into a tailspin of bad moves. And his lawyer is using every one of those bad moves by those like Harry Reid to Blagojevich's benefit.
I have very little doubt that Blagojevich will get impeached, get his trial, be removed from office, then get it back when his lawyer sues on the grounds that the impeachment was handled unconstitutionally. His lawyer will get those tapes thrown out on the grounds they were obtained unconstitutionally. The Illinois Legislature has shown it is not treating Blagojevich with a presumption of innocence, and the same is true of the National Congress and Senate.
They are giving the lawyer everything he needs to take this to the Supreme Court. If the Senate says ANYTHING besides Not Guilty, then the lawyer sues and the Supreme Court will overturn their decision. Blagojevich then gets to keep his governorship, his choice for Senate gets in, EVERYTHING.
Because he stood his ground, and played his hand very well. On the other hand his opponents on the Legislature and the Federal Senate have played their hands so poorly it's downright embarassing.
