Shooting Star

March 1st, 2010 by admin

when is the next shooting star season?

I really, really want to plan something for the next season to see a shooting star. Like you know be outside with friends and family. Can someone tell me when the season is for shooting stars? And where is the best place to watch?

There is no "shooting star season".
There are meteor showers almost every month - the strongest one with the most meteors were the Geminids, but you just missed them, they peaked around December 14.
The next strong shower is the Quadrantids, between January 1 and 5, peaking around Jan 3 (they average around the same number as the Geminids, at peak around 120 per hour).
If you miss that one, the next shower with a large average per hour is the Eta Aquarids, April 19 - May 28, peak on May 6.

The best place to watch a meteor shower is anytime after local midnight from a very dark site (no city lights nearby). The night has to be clear (no clouds or fog), then you just watch the sky.
You can see meteors any night of the year, but you will see more during a meteor shower.

So - can anyone explain why all the right answers have 2 thumbs down? Is someone jealous we answered before them, or is there someone out there to discredit accurate information?
