SPELLING: Can someone explain the correct use of the name Thomas when talking about his possessions?

When do you use Thomas's and Thomas' or Thomases, are they right in different sentences? Or is only one correct on all ocassions?

Whether you simply add an apostrophe or an apostrophe+s honestly depends on which style guide you go with.

AP style, which is used for newspapers and other news media, dictates that for proper nouns ending in an s, the possessive is always an apostrophe. So, according to AP style, the correct way to speak of a book belonging to Thomas would be Thomas' book. AP style would count the form Thomas's as incorrect.

The Chicago Manual of Style, which is used for book publishing, is a bit more complicated on this point, but generally calls for an apostrophe+s, though are exceptions.

Thomases is always the plural of Thomas and is not possessive.

Wikipedia has a small entry on this under "Apostrophe."
