Why is trout more expensive than salmon?
I went to the store and dag the trout's more expensive than the salmon? How come b/c I thought there were trout farms throughout the USA? (It's only 2 bucks more per pound but sheesh)
just wandering b/c I need to eat more lean meat than like beef and stuff

There are not trout farms all over the US - there are SOME, but not many.
MOST of the fish in the supermarkets are from the oceans, where they are caught by fishermen in the large trawlers.
Those that are farmed, it is more expensive to run a fish farm than it is for the trawlers to go out and get them in the nets.
Trout are also not as abundant as salmon is because of overfishing - salmon is a more protected fish because they only lay their eggs once a year, so the fishing of them is enforced, and therefore the species is a lot more abundant.
Trout are not protected and have become overfished - they have not been able to keep up their numbers. That is why there are some trout farms - but it is a very expensive thing to do, it is not like a chicken farm, which is expensive but way cheaper than keeping a trout farm.
They have to monitor the water levels, temperature, clean the tanks, feed the trout, etc....way more upkeep and expenses than running other farms.
Between the 2 methods of getting trout to the supermarkets - that is why it is more expensive - there are less trout and it is way more expensive to farm them.
